Many of you may not know, but before I was Dethrose Vintage, I was Max & Chloe Vintage. I won't go into the name change but trust me a lot more than just my store named changed at the time. Dethrose was about a new beginning, not just for my lil' shop but for me in general. Well, tonight I was looking through my old blog, see it here, and I decided to re post my first entry for those of you who never saw it.  So here it is.
**************************************************************************
August 17, 2009
I basically love all things vintage, pretty, feminine, floral, strong, innovative and just simply creative. So why not write about those things? The beauty that inspires me, the people that inspire me.

Here's the run down on who I am. My name is Karyn. I was born in Southern Illinois in Chester, a small town of around 7000 people. Home to Popeye the Sailor Man, and Pierre Menard. A benefit of living in such a small area is the history surrounding us at all times.

My family always took an interest in the classics. My mother would always introduce us to the sitcoms of the 50's and 60's, probably why my first crush was Dick Van Dyke! Mom also loves the cinema of the late 30's and so on.  Her favorites are the 40's comedy 'The Major and the Minor' starring the lovely Ginger Rogers and the 60's comedy 'Pillow Talk' starring my mother's favorite, Doris day.

Mom had the best taste in movies and music. Looking through her pictures in high school always made me jealous. Saddle shoes, petticoats and the formals, oh my! So needless to say, she raised 5 children that would become obsessed with the history of music, movies, fashion and interior design. My sister would take me to thrift shops searching for the best vintage finds. My brothers would take me to antique malls and auctions looking for the perfect pieces for their home and collections. So what came of this? A little sister and daugther who dreams of living in an era full of waist coats, pocket watches, full skirts, hair pieces and dressing up for dinner.

So now I run an online etsy store that is full of vintage loveliness. I collect everything from the 40's to the 80's. I specialize in unique pieces from the 40's and 50's and ready to wear from the 60's and 70's. I'm constantly collecting and looking for more. My favorite thing in the world is getting up early, getting my large latte and going to an estate sale. If only I could do it everyday!
***********************************************************************
Wow! It's so funny to read that now, and I'm happy to say, I do get to do this everyday! And I have all of you to thank for emaking Dethrose what it is today! Thank you for all your kindness and support! I "heart" all of you:)

xoxo,
Karyn

Spotlight on My Sis!!

This weeks Spotlight is a special one. If you have been reading my blog for a while you know that I come from a very diverse and creative family. My sister Amy is one of the most driven creative beings I know! She and I have so many similarities and differences when it comes to our creativity and style. Amy owns two of the cutest and most interesting shops on Etsy. Please enjoy learning more about Amy and visit her adorable shops and blog! Mittens, Vintage Market Place and Mittensathome

1.What made me start my blog and easy shop?
I had stumble upon a tutorial back in 07 of how to put a zipper in bags, I had forgotten, the girl mentioned you could find her goods on etsy.  So I went and looked into what it was and fell in love.  I set up a shop that weekend and that led to setting up a Vintage shop not long after.
My blog,  well I had wanted to blog for years, reading Posie Gets Cozy for the longest time made me dream of being a blogger. I am not computer savvy and it wasn't until I was shown blogger that I knew I could start one.  I love journals, so this is just like an online journal.  Great to keep my family up to date on Brooklyn.
2. Vintage Market Place and Mittens is your shop/blog name, where did this come about?
Mittens is the name of a cat I have always wanted but never had, ya know a cat with paws that look like they are wearing mittens?  So my love of cats and mittens has led to people thinking I make mittens, which I do not.  Looking back I probably should have chose a better name. LOL
Vintage Market place came up because my shop was all vintage.  I just wanted a simple and easy name people would remember when searching for vintage goods.
3. What do you find inspires you most?
I can't say 'most' but anything grungy, tattered, stained, torn up, old paper.
that is what inspires my art and vintage selections and decorating style.
My hats and scarves are inspired by color combination in yarn. My style is vintage so my hats and scarves have a vintage look with adding vintage buttons to all for adornments.

4. If you could live in any decade, what would it be?
Ooo, that is a hard one because I love so many of them.  When I was younger I was, well I still am kind of obsessed with bloomers and petticoats so the 1800-1900's were very comfy looking to me.  But I also love the overskirts and pants that Lucy wore, yet my personal style of everyday reflects more of the boho 70s.  but if I had to choose, I would stick with what we are in, cuz I love all the modern amenities that we have today

5. Who is your style Icon?
Well I love love Nicole Richie and her boho style.  She looks so put together all the time.
She inspires my choices in clothing and jewelry.
Now just if I were that tiny....
6. Do you find music to be a big inspiration for your creativity?
I really used to, I couldn't sew without my music blaring for me to sing along to.
It really got my creative juices flowing.  Then baby came along and no noise rules had to come along, nap times were and are my only time for creating these days and I have learned to really enjoy QUIET time.

7. If you could have the wardrobe of anyone, who would it be?
Once again Nicole Richie
or the Olsen Twins,  why are all my favs so tiny
8. Do you find the time of year, seasons, to be a big influence on your style?
OH YES, definitely.  I start shopping for my fall wardrobe in JUNE
Fall is my favorite, the layers but not needing a coat.  Boots and great leather bag and a great hat and scarf.  oooh and tights gotta have tights!!!!

9. Were you always interested in vintage lifestyles and fashion?
YES!!
I always thought I would be a clothing designer and would sketch clothing ever since I was a teen.  Well, life takes turns and that never happened.  I watched so many great movies as a child,  my favs were Audrey and Doris, tv was Lucy, Patty Duke.  I couldn't get enough of Nick at Nite back in the 90's all the black and white shows they used to show.  Made my heart swoon.  Every apartment I have had has been decorated in vintage thrifting finds and now that I own my house it still reflects those early days of thrifting for vintage finds.
10. What colors are you mostly drawn to?
For dressing, browns and grays but I really love Green and shades of certain blues for accents.
My home is green, it contains pops of reds, god, that sounds like santas house.   No, it is brown greens and deep reds mixed not a lot of color more neutral with pops of color

11. Where are your favorite places to shop? Online, thrift, antique shops?
Favorite is thrifting, here in Vegas it really sucks but I still go to try to seek out something that will make my heart skip a beat.  So when I go home, it is what I live for.
Then etsy.  Since we don't have great thriftstores I have to shop for vintage a lot, maybe too much on etsy.  I only seek out the super cheap and tattered.  It is rare because it seems what I have always loved is becoming very popular and expensive.

12. Describe an ideal day for you?
Waking up to rain and clouds and heading to get my latte and stopping in for a little shopping be it thrifting or just heading to target.  After being able to sit in my studio on a latte high and creating my art for my Vintage etsy shop or for the galleries I am in.

13. What is your favorite part about being a blogger and shop owner?
Realizing that people "GET" what I do.
I have such great customers and followers that let me know that I am not "wasting my time" as my college professor once told me.
I feel a great accomplishment when I sell or get comments from all over the world on my works.  Connecting with people that have become great friends and people I can count on.
Blogging really is a great community of women supporters of the arts.
14. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Unfortunately, still here in Vegas.  But with my family who I adore and mom to a teenager
eeks...hopefully a store front owner and a successful business woman.

Dress and Spotlight!

As you know from past posts, I had done a dress swap with Quincy over at Q's Daydream with 2 fabulous dresses outta of the Dethrose closet. I could not have been happier with the pictures she's taken with the dresses! Quincy and I share our love for the 50's on our blogs and in our wardrobes quite often. So I thought what better than to have her model my favorite late 40's and 50's dresses. Yesterday I received an email from Quincy linking me to her blog and I can't tell you how great the photos are! This Brings me to my Spotlight on Quincy from Q's Daydream ! Although I have never met Quincy in person, her Blog and Shop have such a great energy and joy to them, It feels like I have met her. Thats the great thing about blogging and sharing our passions with others who can understand the love of putting life back in to something once its been tossed.

Enjoy getting know Quincy!

I just adore the way Quincy put the accessories together. Really giving it a sweet Southern feel! Thank again lady for making it look so adorable!! For questions, or if you are interested in the dress email me at dethrosevintage@gmail.com.

1. What made you start your blog and easy shop?
I decided to start my blog after discovering a couple other vintage blogs. I just thought it looked so much fun! From there I discovered Etsy and started Q's Daydream Vintage!
2. Q's Daydream is your shop/blog name, where did this come about?
Well, I started my blog when I was home sick with mono. People always call me Q and my blog was sort of a daydream to keep my mind off being sick. So Q's Daydream it was!
3. What do you find inspires you most?
Old movies and movie stars. I grew up watching Shirley Temple and Elvis movies. I always wanted to look like the girls in the Elvis movies, lol.
4. If you could live in any decade, what would it be?
The late 50's to early 60s, for sure!
5. Who is your style Icon?
Oh gosh, there are many! Jean Seberg, Leslie Caron, Brigitte Bardot, Elvis...
6. You seem to be a huge Elvis Presley fan, do you find music to be a big inspiration for your creativity?
I do. I listen to music all day while I'm working. Usually oldies ;o)
7. If you could have the wardrobe of anyone, who would it be?
Hmmmm, Zooey Deschanel.
8. Do you find the time of year, seasons, to be a big influence on your style?
Yes. I'm more inspired by the simplicity of spring and summer.
9. Were you always interested in vintage lifestyles and fashion?
Always. I remember going shopping with my Mom and finding my first vintage bathing suit at 10. When I was real little I wanted to be/dress like Shirley Temple.
10. What colors are you mostly drawn to?
Red is my favorite! Also black and blue.
11. Where are your favorite places to shop? Online, thrift, antique shops?
Etsy for sure. Vintage shops around town, friends closets...
12. Describe an ideal day for you?
Sleeping in, then going out for a morning latte with my hubby. Some thrifting, walking in the sun, a drive to Memphis, hehe.
13. What is your favorite part about being a blogger and shop owner?
Being able to share my love of vintage with so many wonderful gals. I've met so many great people through blogging and Etsy!
14. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Still selling vintage with a couple kids that I can dress in vintage, lol!

To Shop Q's great selection of vintage go to her shop! And read & follow her lovely blog!

Spotlight Dear Golden Vintage

It's another snow day here in Chicago. So far my morning has consisted of, Mad Men, fruit salad & toast, and pilates. My afternoon will consist of blogging, taking photos for Etsy and new Dethrose Vintage shop updates.

Today is the next spotlight that I have been very excited to post. Dear Golden Vintage, shop owner Lauren, was lovely enough to take time out of her busy day to answer a few questions for me! Lauren shop is one of the most lovely Vintage collections I have ever seen. I think if I was to see her collection I would have a heart attack! Lauren has such a great eye for Vintage and has such a great modern yet timeless style.  Enjoy!

1. What made you start your blog and easy shop?

I started my shop in 2008, but I started collecting vintage when I was about 15. My mom collected antiques so I was always around old things and in high school I came up on a barn sale with 10 cent vintage dresses as far as the eye could see, I bought all the ones that fit me and have never been the same since! Oh to find a barn like that again! I started my vintage shop simply because my husband saw me looking at vintage on Etsy and noted that since I had such an obsession with vintage clothing I should give selling it a whirl. Three days later I opened my shop!

2. What do you find inspires you most?

It's different all the time and can be almost anything. Movies, books, other people, but on the whole I think old movies inspire me the most, naturally!

3. If you could live in any decade, what would it be?

I'd love to live in the 1920s, the mid-to-late 1950s in New York (just to see the jazz!).

4. Who is your style Icon?

I can't say that I have one in particular, sorry if that's boring!

5. Do you find music to be a big inspiration for your creativity?

Hugely, I am very very into music, I played the violin for 14 years so I love classical music. I listing to jazz the most but outside of the in terms of popular music I listen to more than I can list. Both of my parents were very into music and I am married to a musician, so it's just part of the fabric of life.

6. If you could have the wardrobe of anyone, who would it be?

Heck, my own!

7. Do you find the time of year, seasons, to be a big influence on your style?

Living in Michigan? Yes, there's no way around it. My style changes a lot from summer to winter I think. In the fall I tend to dress sort of boyishly, then in the winter sort of more feminine and snow bunny like and in the summer a bit more edgy mixed with very pretty vintage pieces.

8. Were you always interested in vintage lifestyles and fashion?
Completely.

9. What colors are you mostly drawn to?
Non-colors really. My favorite color is gray. After that I love all the neutrals with some peach and mustard thrown in. I've never really gotten into the colors blue or red though...and subsequently I find it hardest to stock pieces in those colors in my shop although I know other women like them. I am always working on that!

10. Where are your favorite places to shop? Online, thrift, antique shops?

Antique malls for sure. Such an adventure. And since I like more vintage/antique things than clothing I can basically spend hours and hours in antique malls (and do!)
11. Describe an ideal day for you?

Hmm, wake up to coffee from this amazing independent coffee shop near my house. Do some listing of vintage pieces in the shop then head out for some vintage hunting. Outside of work stuff, I think an ideal day would include a woody hike and then some evening cocktails...

12. What is your favorite part about being a blogger and shop owner?

I like being a shop owner much more than being a blogger...and my favorite part is that I am completely immersed in something I love, nay, am obsessed with! I feel like I use all of my skill-sets in my job which feels so great compared to other jobs I have had. I also love seeing girls in vintage they have purchased in my shop, that makes me really really happy.
13. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
If I am lucky I hope to be selling vintage, cuddling my kitties, listening to jazz, taking hikes, getting lost in antique malls, drinking coffee, having cocktails and seeing girls in Dear Golden Vintage. :)

Spotlight Slubird! & Giveaway Announcement!!

I decided for the New Year to start doing 2 things, a few giveaways and spotlights on some of my favorite people in the vintage/creative world that inspire me on a daily basis. First off I want to announce the Winner of my first Giveaway!!! That Damn Green Dress!! This lovely blogger shares her passion for Anthropologie and Vintage on her lil blog:) I can't wait to send you your gift. I will post picks after you receive it that way I won't ruin the surprise for you!

As for the spotlight, over the next few weeks, you will get a chance to meet some of the darling ladies who are part of my daily reads and shops that I frequent often! I picked 6, a Michigan Vintage Maven, a Las Vegas Vintage Lovely and 2 Southern Vintage Belles and todays spotlight Miss Sarah Louise! This list will probably grow a little longer as the year continues:)

I have gotten the wonderful chance to actually meet and work along side of Sarah Louise at a few vintage showcases. Besides our shared passion for Vintage and Mad Men, I really adored her style. So soon after I began to read her blog and frequent her 2 etsy shops...

1. What made you start your blog and Etsy shop?

I've been blogging online in some form or another for years (Livejournal mostly) so it just seemed like a natural transition. I got bored with Livejournal, I had an "artist" blog when I was in Columbia [getting my BFA in photography] but after a while I wanted a clean slate. I started reading a lot of fashion and lifestyle blogs about a year and a half ago and I've been into it ever since.

As for the vintage store, that also felt like an extension for me, as I've been selling vintage on eBay on and off for a few years. I started going to Etsy looking for vintage and liked the shop format better than auctions, and I just got addicted! I got so inspired looking at all the handmade things, too, that I realized I can learn to make jewelry, a passion I always had.

2. Slubird is your shop name, where did this come about?/Tzipporit is your blog name, where did this come about?

Slubird is a nickname I've had since 2005 or so. My name is Sarah Louise, my friend Claire started calling me Slouise, then shortened it to Slou, then Slü. So my nickname was Slu (umlauts optional) and I started drawing myself as birds and I can't remember how it turned into Slubird, but it stuck! Some of my friends even call me Slubird in real life.

Tzipporit is Hebrew for "little bird." Slubird was my blog account at Columbia, and I wanted a clean slate, so I stuck with that one. I'm part Jewish and I wanted to get a tattoo of that word in Hebrew, so I love it.
3. What do you find inspires you most?

Two things; colour and seeing what actual people wear. It's obtainable since most of us can't afford designer clothes, it's nice to see what you can slap together with pieces that are thrifted and from fast fashion stores, especially mixed with a few higher quality garments here and there. Colour inspires me a lot when I'm shopping and getting ready in the morning. I'm so confident when I'm wearing the perfect colour combination, regardless of the pieces themselves.

4. If you could live in any decade, what would it be?

I really wouldn't mind living in the Gilded Age in America or the Victorian Era in England. That era introduced so many things that we have in our society right now, while also still being into classical art and history. It's a perfect mixture of vintage and modern.

5. Who is your style Icon?

I can't pick one. Honestly, it changes a lot, especially when I change my look. Since I currently have a pixie cut I'm looking at what other celebrities and bloggers with pixie cuts wear so I know what flatters it, as well as what redheads and curvy/petite girls wear. It's nice to see other girls flaunt what you are also proud of about yourself!

6. Do you find music to be a big inspiration for your creativity?

It was a lot when I was studying photo, but not so much these days.

7. If you could have the wardrobe of anyone, who would it be?

Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan have some super cute things that I'm coveting, as well as pretty much anything worn on Mad Men. I'd love to raid their costumes when the series ends.

8. Do you find the time of year, seasons, to be a big influence on your style?

Oh yeah. Since Chicago has all four seasons I have to dress for comfort in each one. I'm always layering, so I own many cardigans. When it gets too hot I only wear cotton dresses; when it gets too cold I cover myself in wool. My style sense kind of reverts to plain and survivalist in the winter which is why I want to live somewhere warmer; more time to wear cute clothes!

9. Were you always interested in vintage lifestyles and fashion?

There were Victorian curios all over the house, my mom loved them and that always reminds me of her. She and my dad also loved weird kitschy things from the 40s and 50s, too. They also grew up in the 60s and 70s, and they kept a lot of things from that point in time. There is still a lot of vintage artwork, records, toys, photos, books, clothing, and barware in my dad's house today; I feel like I grew up with just as many old things as modern things.
10. What colors are you mostly drawn to?

I really love red, blue, and green, in different shades. Teal, chartreuse, red, and forest green are a lot of my wardrobe; I really love jewel tones. My closet is definitely a rainbow, though!

11. Where are your favorite places to shop? Online, thrift, antique shops?

If I'm looking for something that I definitely or might want vintage, I check Etsy and thrift shops first. There are a few online stores I like, even just to get ideas, and even places like Forever 21, H&M, and Target have a few gems that I've had for years.

12. Describe an ideal day for you?

Sunny, warm day around 80 degrees, me and my boyfriend have a leisurely brunch, then do some vintage shopping. Then we have a nice walk, and later get dressed up and go to a nice dinner. Luckily I've had this happen a few times! I'm lucky to have found a boy who loves vintage as much as I do.

13. What is your favorite part about being a blogger and shop owner?

Being able to share things with other people, and have them be excited about them as much as I am. I love when people buy a dress or jewelry from either of me and tell me how much they love it; I've been so excited about something vintage or handmade I recently acquired and it makes me happy, it's nice to be on the other end, too. I also love on the blog when I can share an event or memory I've had and it makes them happy, reminds them of other wonderful things.

14. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully living in the Southwest somewhere, doing whatever makes me feel most fulfilled (whether it's Etsy or something else), still with my Michael, and just feeling very happy and healthy!

So Long 2010!

Another year has passed, and way too fast! 2010 flew by, it really is kinda fuzzy. I mean at the beginning of the year my blog and shop was Max & Chloe. Changing my name was just the beginning. At first I really wasn't that keen on having to change the name. I mean, Max & Chloe was the start of all this and it had meaning to me beyond vintage. But when Dethrose came about, I instantly got a terrific feeling. It was one of those moments where you just feel it, it made sense. Since the change, it has been very positive for my little shop. More shoppers, more blogger meet ups and just a better all around vibe.

Now I have a lot of free time on my hands, actually today was the start of that. I truly could not be more excited about this! I am planning so many new and exciting things for 2011. More traveling, more vintage show cases. Starting next weekend actually! Vintage Heaven, and then on the 15th the grand opening of Krispy Fringe Vintage Couture. Invites will be sent out very very soon! I can't wait to write more to all of you and do more interviews with my fav bloggers!

In the meantime I wanna leave you all with 2 things. First, a special New Year Give Away! I want you all to tell me what your plans are for the New Year, and what was your favorite thing about 2010. On Monday morning after we have all recuperated, I will pick one of your names and I will send you a special vintage item to start your new year off with a bang! So either leave comments or email me at dethrosevintage@gmail.com
